Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
The CFPB in a federal agency established by Congress to protect consumers by carrying out Federal consumer financial laws. Among other things, the CFPB:

  • Takes consumer complaints
  • Restricts unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices
  • Promotes financial education
  • Researches consumer behavior
  • Monitors financial markets for new risks to consumers
  • Enforces laws that outlaw discrimination and other unfair treatment in consumer finance

Banks with the word "National" or "N.A." in their titles are regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).  In addition, the OCC now regulates federal savings banks and savings and loans identified with the word "Federal", "F.S.B.", or "F.A." in their titles.  For complaints regarding national banks or federal savings banks, please contact:

These are licensed and monitored by the local police or sheriff's department. Complaints relating to pawn shops should be referred to the appropriate local law enforcement authority.

These are not supervised by the Department of Banking and Finance. Complaints or questions concerning credit bureaus should be directed to the Federal Trade Commission. For copies of your credit report or for questions concerning your credit report, please contact the appropriate credit bureau.
