The Department has regulatory and/or licensing authority over money service businesses (check cashers, sellers-issuers of payment instruments and money transmitters - collectively referred to as MSBs) conducting business in Georgia.
A person or company that cashes checks or other payment instruments for a fee or other consideration must have a license from this Department. A person or company that cashes checks for more than $1,000 per person per day must register with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) as an MSB.
The Department uses the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS) to manage its Money Service Business licensees (MSB).
